Take notice that the Candidates’ Financial Statements provided in this document are made available as required by Section 88 of the Municipal Elections Act (MEA):

Information to be made available

  (9.1) The Clerk shall make the documents filed under sections 88.5, 88.29 and 88.32  available at no charge for viewing by the public on a website or in another electronic format as soon as possible after the documents are filed. 2016, c. 15, s. 45 (3).

Privacy

Despite anything in the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, these documents filed with the Clerk are public records.  (see MEA Section 88(5))  No person shall use information obtained from these public records except for election purposes s.88 (10), or they are guilty of an offence (MEA Section 94).  There are penalties and fines for offences under the MEA.  For more details, please see the MEA at www.ontario.ca/laws or contact the Municipal Clerk.

2018 Municipal Elections Accessibility Plan

Persons wishing to put their name forward as a Candidate in the 2018 Municipal Elections for the offices of Mayor and Municipal Councillor can begin filing their Nomination Papers as of Tuesday May 1, 2018.  Persons interested in filing their nomination papers must do so with the Municipal Clerk before spending or raising ANY monies for campaign activities.  Voting Day is Monday October 22, 2018.

Elections are held for the following offices:

  • Mayor – One (1) to be elected at large
  • Councillor – Six (6) to be elected at large

Who can run for office in the 2018 Municipal Elections?

A person is entitled to be a candidate in the 2018 Municipal Election if he or she is a qualified elector.  A candidate must be qualified as of the day he or she is nominated and must remain qualified throughout the election period and, if elected, throughout the term of office.

A person is entitled to be a candidate if he or she:

  • is a resident of the Town of Mattawa, or an owner or tenant of land in the Town of Mattawa, or the spouse of such an owner or tenant;
  • is a Canadian citizen;
  • is at least eighteen years old on Voting Day; and
  • is not prohibited from voting by law.

Nominations

Nomination Papers must be filed by the candidate, in person, or by an agent acting on the candidate’s behalf at the Municipal Office, during normal working hours, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm from Tuesday, May 1, 2018 up to 2 pm on Nomination Day which is Friday July 27, 2018.

The candidate or the agent will be required to provide proof of identity.  Nomination Papers cannot be faxed as original signatures are required on all election documents filed with the Clerk.  If the Nomination Paper is filed by an agent of the candidate, the form must be fully completed by the candidate prior to filing.

Filing Fee

Candidates must pay a filing fee when submitting their Nomination Papers.  These fees must be paid at the time of filing by cash, debit, certified cheque or money order.

The filing fee for a candidate running for Mayor is $200.00.

The filing fee for a candidate running for Councillor is $100.00.

Nomination filing fees are refundable if the nomination is withdrawn, the candidate is elected, or he or she receives more than two percent of the votes case in the election for office.

Key Dates

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to Friday July 27, 2018 Nomination Period

Nomination forms may be filed by candidates prior to Nomination Day, at any time when the Clerk’s Office is open (Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to Friday, October 19, 2018 Registered Third Party Filing Period

An individual, corporation or trade union that conducts advertising related to the 2018 municipal elections must file as a Registered Third Party.

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to Monday, December 31, 2018 Campaign Period

The campaign period begins once a candidate has filed a nomination form and ends on December 31, 2018.

Friday, July 27, 2018 Nomination Day

Last day for filing nominations. Nomination forms filed on this date may only be filed between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Monday, July 30, 2018 Acclamations

If, at 4:00 p.m. on the Monday following Nomination Day, the number of certified candidates for an office is the same as or less than the number to be elected, the Clerk shall immediately declare the candidate or candidates elected by acclamation.

Friday, August 31, 2018 Voters’ List

The Clerk shall make the preliminary list of voters available for election purposes only.

Tuesday, September 4, 2018 to Monday, October 22, 2018 Revision of Voters’ List – Application to Add, Remove or Correct One’s Own Name

An individual may make application to the Clerk requesting that their name be added, removed or corrected.  The application must be approved by the Clerk or their designate.

Advance voting commences at 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Municipal Office Council Chambers.

Advance voting commences at 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at the Municipal Office Council Chambers.

Monday, October 22, 2018 Voting Day

Voting commences at 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Mike Rodden Arena and Community Centre

Voting commences at 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Algonquin Nursing Home voting station

Voters are required to show identification in order to vote. If your name is on the voters’ list, you will be required to show one piece of identification that has your name and address on it in order to receive a ballot.
