The Mattawa Fire Departmentis a volunteer fire department with approximately 20 members. This team is manned by a group of dedicated individuals who have a keen sense of team and public safety. With the Town being so small in geographical area, the response time to emergency calls is by far the best in the region and among the best in all of Canada, among volunteer fire departments. No volunteer fire department gets rolling faster than Mattawa’s Fire Department and that is comforting to those of us living in Mattawa.

Burning Permit

Due to the amount of complaints regarding open air burning, a recreational open air burning By-Law was passed at the council meeting on June 13th, 2011. With this by-law the Town of Mattawa along with the Fire Department will be able to regulate and control who can have a fire and when they can burn by having a permit system in place that is part of the by-law. Permits are $20.  This By-Law is effective immediately.

Carbon Monoxide Alarm By-Law

The town of Mattawa has adopted By-Law 10-29 which is a new carbon monoxide alarm By-Law, requiring the installation and maintenance of carbon monoxide alarms in all residential occupancies containing fuel fired appliances and/or having attached garage(s).

After a tragedy to a Woodbridge family of four who died in their sleep due to carbon monoxide poisoning, it was brought up by Council that the Town of Mattawa should draft a By-Law requiring the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in residential buildings, which will reduce the health risks to our citizens.

The Mattawa Fire Department will educate and inform the residents and owners of all residential properties of the requirements of this By-Law which is intended for their protection.  A six month “education time window” will be in effect until June 13, 2011 for the Mattawa Fire Department to inform all affected before enforcement shall occur.

Install Smoke Alarms: Its the Law!
Most fatal fires occur at night when people are asleep. Often, victims never wake up. A working smoke alarm will detect smoke and sound an alarm to alert you, giving you precious time to escape.

Caregivers Guide to Fire Safety: A Resource for Caregivers of People with Alzheimer Disease or Related Dementia
Alzheimer Disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disease that destroys vital brain cells. As a result of the changes to the brain, it no longer works as it used to. People with this disease become less and less able to make sense of information from the outside world. They become unable to think, remember, understand, and make decisions as before. If a fire were to occur in their home, people with Alzheimer Disease or other dementia would be extremely vulnerable to serious injury, or even death. This fact sheet provides caregivers with important fire safety information that can help them to provide a safer environment for persons with Alzheimer Disease – and those who live with them.
